A re-install might not be necessary. Supposedly, XP has a problem with this in not letting the user change the driver. Adding new hardware to the computer should not have that affect... This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported).
