Did time update didn't help, but agter downloading/installing Windows Genuine Notification Tool from www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20888/a>everything is fine. All of those machines were fully updated as of last Patch Tuesday (11/11/2014). it would help if they would tell us.

But even renaming %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution on the failed server does no fix the issue as it just repopulates with the expired certificate. For that reason, it slows down your laptop after some time.

if you set your local computer system date to a date previous to that, then microsoft update functions ok. The same trick did nothing on the other two machines. Set the services to automatic and started them which resolved the issue. That's all it was! For one thing, although Microsoft stopped issuing new patches for XP, all previous bug fixes remain available, which is great for machines that have not been updated in a long time.
