It should be rebuilt by XP next access in thumbnail view. Still in Task Manager, Went to File and then New Task.4. Left clicking in the tool bar on the start button line across the bottom works, so does left clicking on the desktop. I think the symptom of Explorer crashing when searching was an unintended side-effect. Creating your account only takes a few minutes. No known fix that this rookie knows of, but thought I'd share the info. So with a few networked drives off-line, I can't even get to "My Computer". You can also try opening the drives directly to see if it hangs, that'll confirm the issue.
